how does it work?
Poodhazhir Self-Help Group
It started with a simple conversation. A conversation with ten women just outside Pondicherry, India who had taken out a micro-finance loan to start their own business to combat the financial issues associated with alcoholic husbands. The women of the Poondhazhir Self-Help Group were making beautiful hand-stitched bags made from a fiber that grew locally in South India. Throughout the conversation, all of the women expressed their desire for growing their business beyond the scope of their local village—they just didn't have the resources nor the network to do so. That's where we came in.
Since investing in the Poondhazhir women, they have been able to employee 5 new women. We have worked with the women to design new patterns and prints and have even focused on facilitating better logistical practices so the women can continue to grow their business without our help.
During the Summer of 2014, our founder was walking the streets of Nairobi, Kenya when he met a young woman named Angy. Angy felt the repercussions of the 2008 Great Recession and lost her job in Nairobi. To support herself, she started a business making duffle bags that celebrated the vibrancy of Kenyan culture. As her business gained traction, Angy started employing at-risk females from Kibera—the largest slum in Nairobi. Angy took these girls in and taught them stitching methods that they could later use to start their own enterprise.
